About

I draw to look more closely.

I'm Clara Voss, an artist working in graphite, charcoal and ink. My drawings are records of attention: faces across long sittings, branches pinned to the studio wall, rooftops seen from a fourth-floor window.

Background

From the morning bus to the studio

I started drawing the way most children do, and simply never stopped. At sixteen I filled a sketchbook a month with the people on my morning bus, and that habit of drawing whatever sits in front of me still shapes everything I make.

I trained in illustration in Porto and later completed an MA in Fine Art, Drawing, in Lisbon. For several years I worked as a scientific illustrator, drawing seeds and specimens for natural history publications. That work taught me patience, and a deep respect for what you only notice after the first hour of looking.

Today I draw full time from a small studio in Lisbon. Alongside my own series I take a few portrait and house commissions each year, and I teach a weekly life drawing class for adults who are convinced they cannot draw. Most of them can.

A drawing is a record of attention. Every line says: I looked here, and then here, and then here.

Materials and practice

Three materials, one slow habit

Whatever the subject, the method stays the same: look for a long time, draw lightly, then commit.

  1. 01

    Graphite

Soft pencils from 2H to 8B, built up in thin layers and lifted back with a kneaded eraser. Best for faces, hands and anything that needs a quiet, close look.

  2. 02

    Charcoal

Willow and compressed charcoal on heavy paper, for figures and portraits that need weight, movement and deep shadow.

  3. 03

    Pen and ink

Dip pens, fineliners and a single grey wash, carried out into the city. Ink cannot be erased, so every line has to be a decision.
